Canadian Flaxseed is a small herbaceous plant with flat brown or gold seeds, used in alternative medicine for its beneficial properties due to its high contains of Omega-3-6-9, fatty acids and anti-inflammatory agents. It also helps in cases of gastrointestinal upset, constipation, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, and acne.

Flaxseed and its derivatives, oil linseed are rich sources of alpha-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that is a biological precursor of omega 3 and fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid. Although omega 3 has been associated with improved performance in cardiovascular disease, evidence from human trials is mixed regarding the efficacy of flax seed products for the treatment of coronary artery disease or hyperlipidemia.

The lignan constituent elements found in flax seed (not flax seed oil) have a antioxidant in vitro properties and potential estrogen receptors, which are theories promoted for the treatment of breast cancer. However, there is insufficient clinical studies in humans to make a recommendation.

As a source of fiber mucilage, oral flaxseed (not including flax seed oil ) may have laxative properties. At higher doses or when taken with the inadequate amount of water, flaxseed may cause intestinal obstruction. The effects of flaxseed over the levels of blood glucose are not clear, although hyperglycemia effects have been reported in a number of cases.

Flaxseed oil contains only alpha-linolenic acid components of flaxseed and fiber and lignans components. Therefore, flax seed oil may share the purported lipid-lowering properties that are attributed to flaxseed, but not raised to laxative or anti-carcinogenic effects.

The Pharmanatural® Linseed Capsules have been carefully formulated to yield the benefits listed above when taking the recommended dose.
